Pops went and had his blood work done two days ago in preparation for his infusion of Zometta (bone strengthener) at the infusion clinic. That took longer than expected and wiped him out for the day. Yesterday he went for the infusion and his blood work was read. His PSA was at 20.4. He has gone from (and these readings are not to the detail): 1.4 3 months ago to 1.8 2 months ago to 4.6 1 month ago and now 20.4. Bottom line: the cancer drugs are not working and the cancer is waking up. He tells me it feels like it is growing and he has had more pain in his abdominal and upper leg areas. The doctor said they will recheck his blood to see if it is a false reading and then they can talk about options.
Options that were told to my Mom, EE, were that there is a possibility of more radiation. Both parents negated the idea and said that is not even an option. Radiation helped facilitate the lymphedema and the inflammation of the obturator internus muscle that they think causes so much pain. We will never know how much radiation precipitated secondary effects as mentioned above because let's face it: anyone I ever talk to in the medical community says that bone cancer is very painful. I need to keep that in mind myself sometimes when he is miserable and my patience is thin.
Where this leads us is yet to be determined. Whether it is months, years, whatever is not in the control of those that Lone Star feels dictate his life at times. I do know he was not upset at the news. When I talked to him I said "Sorry about your blood work results." in which he responded "Why, I think it's good news." He is tired of low quality of life.
We will check out options for his continued well being and put it in the hands of the big guy...
